MSS were approached by Tafeta + Partners on behalf of Niyi Olagunju to work on a project for an exhibition.

We were asked to bisect some traditional African sculptures of figures, and then gild the newly cut edges. The metal was chosen from those mined in the regions where the sculptures were originally carved, and include gold, silver and copper.

We made jigs to help guide the process, as it was important to get the vertical cut as central as possible, and keep it straight. Then primed and gilded the surfaces with the metal leaf.

We also produced patinated steel stands for each of the figures, each custom built to suit the size and shape of the sculpture.
