The brief: To produce a clock approximately 800 x 400 x 100 cm in four sections with a very high gloss face. The clock would show local time in hours and minutes, the characters in seven segments. The movement of the blades was generated by pneumatic actuators operated by a computer control system. The clock was fabricated in aluminium and was entirely self-contained for ease of installation- it could essentially be just plugged in. Various surface finishes were investigated for their properties before settling on a painted finish for the face. Because the mechanism is entirely visible, every element had to be designed and fabricated with this in mind.
