Mike Smith Studio fabricated a set of concrete steps to be installed suspended from a wall, a third iteration of  Elmgreen & Dragset’s ‘Social Mobility’ installation. There is a platform at the top which leads down to several steps, some of which have been made to look broken. We used pigment to get a concrete colour.

We created an internal aluminium frame that was clad in weddy board and then placed in a tray mould. We placed fiberglass strands to back it up and put a 3mm screed of Portland Stone Jesmonite on each side of the steps.

The broken edges were created by casting broken concrete slabs into rubber moulds and then using these impressions to make the broken edges of the stairs.
